Number of American tourists to Bali up 2.69 pct


Denpasar - The number of Americans holidaying in Bali reached 47,445 in the January-August 2009 period, which was an 2.69% increase compared to the 46,203 in the same period last year.

"This has placed the United States in the ten big foreign tourist suppliers to Bali," Head of the Bali Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Ida Komang Wisnu said in Denpasar Tuesday.

Ida Koming Wisnu said that the American tourists contributed 3.08 percent of the 1,538,048 foreign tourists visiting the island paradise, which is a 13.32 percent increase compared to the 1,357,263 in the same period last year.

Ida Komang Wisnu also said that most of the American tourists arrived in Indonesia at Ngurah Rai airport, and only 419 arrived by yachts.

Of the ten countries with the biggest contribution of tourists to Bali, seven had booked a significant increase, but three others a decline.

The seven countries whose number of tourists had been increasing significantly, besides the United States, were China with 61.36 percent, Australia 39.59 percent, Malaysia 17.13 percent, France 39.98 percent, the UK 10.50 percent, and Germany 1.22 percent.

In the meantime, the three countries whose foreign tourists to Bali had been declining include Japan down by 10.56 percent, South Korea 4.19 percent, and Taiwan 14.87 percent. (*)
