Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia's largest Muslim organization, has decided that the Islamic Day of Sacrifice, or Idul Adha, would be celebrated on Nov. 27, while the government has yet to announce its date for the holiday pending a meeting with various Muslim organizations.
“Today (Wednesday), we have entered the month of Dzulhijjah,” Ahmad Izzuddin of NU Central Java chapter told tempointeraktif.com on Wednesday. He also said that a number of moon-sighting observations have confirmed the decision.
In the Islamic calendar, Idul Adha falls on the 10th day of Dzulhijjah.
Like Idul Fitri, Idul Adha was often celebrated in Indonesia and other Muslim countries on different days because of the various methods for calculating the dates.
Izzudin said that Indonesian Muslims would most likely celebrate Idul Adha on the same date as Muhammadiyah, the second largest Muslim organization, which has also announced the same date.
The government will have a a deliberative meeting with representatives from Indonesian Islamic organizations in Jakarta today to discuss the holiday date.
